Want to hear something totally crazy??? Yeah, I thought you might.....
This afternoon we attempted to turn on Chris' XBOX 360 so that Emma could watch a Disney Princesses DVD, but instead of booting up and playing along like it normally does the 360 had other ideas. Instead of glowing green, as it should, the power button was glowing red. Uh-Oh....
A quick trip to google let us know that this is known as the "Red Ring of Death" (seriously!), and that this means that there has been a complete failure of the 360's hardware. In other words, the fracker is toast. Best thing we could hope for is that the 360 is still under warranty and Microsoft will fix it, though that can take up to a month according to the web sites we were reading.
But then I came across a few sites mentioning something called "the towel trick", so I got curious. Turns out someone out there figured out that you can save you 360 from the red ring of death by wrapping it in towels. I know, I know - WEIRD!!! How you do it is you completely wrap the xbox in towels, especially the vents, and you turn it on and let it run for 15 minutes or so. By this time the machine should be pretty hot because it hasn't had the air flow to cool itself, so you unwrap it from the towels, turn it off, and let it cool for awhile. Then, when you turn it back on, it works again. Huh??
So we tried it. And dammit, it worked!! Chris is playing right now. Now, I have no idea how long it will last....I saw some posters online say the saw the red light again in 2 weeks, and some said their machines haven't had a problem since. I just thought this was really neat. And mental. It's even been documented on You Tube.
